A partir del siglo XVIII, la figura del cirujano sufre un gran cambio, las grandes Escuelas de Medicina integran la cirugía en la enseñanza médica y surgen así grandes centros en Europa y luego en América, dedicados al entrenamiento en cirugía. Pero a partir de los finales del siglo XIX, gracias al aporte de William Halsted, en base a su experiencia con el modelo alemán de Billroth, se establece un patrón para la formación del residente en cirugía. En Venezuela inicialmente el entrenamiento quirúrgico se completaba en Europa y luego de la Primera Guerra Mundial en EE. UU. Se realiza un recuento histórico.
From the seventeenth century onwards the figure of the surgeons underwent a great change, the great Medical Schools integrated surgical procedures into a medical education and large centers emerged, in Europe and then in America, dedicated to training in surgery. But it is from the end of the nineteenth century thanks the contributions of William Halsted, based on his experience with the German Billroth method, a pattern of study was stablished for the training of the surgery resident. In Venezuela, initially, the surgical training was completed in Europe and after the World War I, in the United States. An historical account is made.
